MICA Sustainable Worm Project

OAK PLANK BIN

Before you begin, look over the main How To Build A Worm Bin page to read about the basic requirements of a bin. Once you know these you can deviate as much or little as you would like.

This bin was tough. But even though every screw had to be waxed, I think it turned out alright. Out of all the bins, I think this plank was made of the most beautiful wood.

1. As always, cut the wood to size.

This includes a small wood strip that will be screwed into the corners.

2. Screwing in the corners.

To screw together, I drilled a hole the size of the inner chamber of the screw, and then used a second drill (equipped with a phillips head bit) to drill it in. At the MICA woodshop was lucky enough to use two drills most of the time.

Clamp the wood as you go. For this bin I had every piece overlap the next. Though this is a more stable construction than having two of the sides sandwiched between two of the others, it meant that I had to account for that width when placing the wood strips. (See above).

That block on top of the bin is wax. This wood was so hard, I ended up waxing each screw before inserting it; Oak is really hard.

3. The Bottom of the bin.

Again, cut your pieces to size. Remember to overlap the walls.

Using strips about the size of one side of the base (and a clamp) screw the strips to the planks. Then, screw into the walls.

4. The Lid

A similar idea, except that this time I left a little room in between the planks of the lid. This gives the worms fresh air to breathe, and actually makes adding smaller food scraps really easy.

Though the wooshop tech argued with me about this construction, saying it would be easier to just cut another piece to fit and then drill holes in the top, by using this method I used what scraps were available to me, saved wood, saved energy by not using the saw and drill again, and (as you can see in the next step) saved even more energy by not having to drill holes for the handle.

5. The Handle

Just tie a knot!
