HOW TO HARVEST A BIN

A bin should be harvested every 3-5 months, typically when the bedding runs out. While there are several ways to harvest your bin, this is my favorite:

Prep a workspace with a water resistant surface (like a tarp or a garbage bag). I harvested this bin in front of the Buddha statue which gives this site its name. It’s best to harvest in sunlight after 1 pm. This way you can use the light to direct the worms without hurting them with harsh sunlight.

Remove as many chunks of food scraps as possible.

And separate worm bin contents (including worms) into piles. The worms will crawl down, away from the light. Pinch the tops of the peaks every few minutes. The worms will crawl down and ideally, you’re left with a big pile of worms. Babies, I’ve noticed, don’t follow this plan as perfectly, and may require a little more work to sort out. Once harvested, you can add the compost to any garden or green space.
