INTRODUCING RED WIGGLERS TO A BIN

Worms come in the mail in a bag like this one. In this particular image, that bag holds 5,000 worms. They will look much smaller when they first arrived, because the worms are dehydrated from the process of shipping. After a few days in the bin, they will start to grow. After two weeks they should be a normal size.

The mixture of soil and newspaper (or dried leaves) should be a few inches deep. Worms do not like sunlight, so you want to give them enough space to crawl down. The soil should be about as damp as a wrung out sponge.

Just put the worms in the bin! Add more water if the soil still seems dry.

They’re going to cluster for a while, especially if you haven’t closed the lid and given them a chance to crawl around yet. Again, this photo includes a lot of worms. If you are a 1-2 portion household, the worms will be about a handful’s worth when they arrive.

Begin introducing more and more food over the course of the next two weeks, until you are feeding them a steady diet of kitchen scraps.
